So, You Have to Postpone Your Wedding… Now What?

A how-to guide for couples whose nuptial plans have gotten a shake-up with the world’s current events.

Edit: Check out What To Expect When You Weren’t Expecting Coronavirus for more tips and specific rescheduling policies from real wedding pros in Utah.

You’re about to get married and COVID-19 has presented you with an unprecedented, rapidly changing, and unclear situation. It’s confusing and frankly discouraging. But we are not about to let all of your hard work go to waste! With some rearranging, patience, compromise and resourcefulness, you can still have the wedding of your dreams – just perhaps on a different day – and here’s how:

Step One: Make a decision.

Decide you’re going to postpone. This one seems obvious but you have a few options here… you could postpone, adjust your plans or move forward (although that last one is probably not advised by the CDC). For this first step, take into consideration the wedding’s location, the number of people that will be attending and the amount of time between now and the wedding itself.

Step Two: Contact your vendors.

Usually we would advise that you take a look at their contracts and figure out their cancellation policies, however because so many vendors are being affected as well, we suggest reaching out to them directly. Try to contact your most important vendors, i.e. venue, caterer, florist, baker and entertainment and work together to figure out your second-best scenario.

Step Three: Contact your MVPs.

Once you get a date that works for your vendors, or at least the majority of them, we recommend reaching out directly to your wedding party, your immediate family, or just the people whose presence is most important to you. If the same dates that work for the vendors work for them, you’re in business!

Step Four: Update your wedding website.

Once you make your decision, you’ll want to update your wedding website. It’s the quickest and easiest way to communicate with the largest number of attendees at once. As you make your decisions, you’ll want to keep your website as up to date as possible. Don’t have a website? We also recommend reaching out directly to your less technologically-savvy guests when you make the big decisions, i.e. date, time, location

Step Five: Breathe a sigh of relief.

Weddings are stressful and you just bought yourself more time to get yours just right. They say hindsight is 20/20 and now you have a little taste of it. Make all those tweaks you wouldn’t have had time to make if the wedding was happening according to your original plan.

Suggestions for a smooth switch:

  1. Try and make your decisions ASAP but don’t jump the gun. You want to give guests and vendors as much time as possible to rearrange their plans but in these uncertain times you also don’t want to solidify a decision too far in advance. For example, if your wedding is mid-July, we’d take a beat, pay attention to the news make a decision as the date gets closer but if your wedding is in two weeks, odds are your vendors have already gotten a head start so get in contact with them ASAP to ensure you don’t incur any additional costs.
  2. Remember a wedding is a celebration of your nuptials and does not necessarily have to take place on the day you legally tie the knot. You can always choose to head to the courthouse and get married legally on your intended wedding day and save the celebration for later!
  3. Don’t let this negatively impact your wedding experience. You are likely only going to get married once. Consciously make sure you’re looking on the bright side. Like we said, a longer planning period often makes for a better wedding!

The days of boxed-in booths are over. Sam Spendlove and Heather Hodge of Couth Booth show us that open-style booths are all the rage, and oh so exciting.

Katherine and Paul’s Winter Wedding at Blue Sky Ranch

THE COUPLE

Katherine and Paul met through mutual friends and dated a year and a half  before Paul popped the question while the two were vacationing in Italy. “On the last day of our stay, Paul planned to take me on a private boat ride and tour around the islands of Lake Maggiore,” Katherine says. “We were not five minutes into the ride when he asked to take a photo in front of the gardens of Isola Bella. On the bow of the boat, he got down on one knee and proposed.”

THE WEDDING

“Early in our relationship, we ventured up to Park City for a weekend of snowboarding and time together,” Katherine says of the trip that solidified their relationship and later became the locale of their destination winter wedding. During the days leading up to the wedding, their guests played in a variety of ways: snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, a spin class at Boom Cycle, spa time at the St. Regis, and trap shooting and whiskey tasting at High West. Their hosted 40-person rehearsal dinner was held at Bill White’s Farm. Blue Sky Ranch hosted the wedding day—a natural fit for the Kentucky-native bride and the groom who spent childhood summers on a family ranch in Northern California.

THE MOOD

“For our winter wedding, we wanted the theme to be whimsical, ethereal and magical,” says Katherine, describing the celebration’s elegant and rustic style. “Every little detail equated to a show-stopping wedding. The Blue Sky barn, the lighting, floral designs and drapery made it all spectacular.” Katherine’s co-workers provided the artwork and paper goods for the couple’s signage. Shotskis and glow-in-the-dark props amped the festivities.

THE CUISINE

“Culinary Crafts worked with me and Paul to create an unbelievable menu that really catered to our exact needs and desires,” Katherine says. The menu featured duo-petite entrees of Rocky Mountain red trout with Utah green apple chutney and beef tenderloin with shallot pan sauce, served with carrot bundles, browned butter and sage gnocchi with Utah corn and wild mushrooms. “Paul is a dessert aficionado, and we decided that instead of a cake, we would just have desserts for people to pick and choose and have all the options they wanted.”

THE TUNES

“Groove Merchants was an absolutely amazing band. We had the best time and everyone spent the night on the dance floor. Had they continued to play, people would have stayed until 5 a.m. dancing! I still have people telling me today how unbelievable the band was the entire night,” Katherine says. The newlyweds chose Clint Black’s “When I Said I Do” for their first dance.

THE HONEYMOON

The couple honeymooned six months after the wedding. “We went to Uganda, Kenya and Mauritius,” Katherine says. “We spent the first four days of our honeymoon in Uganda and Kenya as part of a mission group visiting and helping certain ministries that are tied to our church including Loving Hearts Babies Home and Free Wheelchair Mission.”

The New Bohemian at Light Loft Studio

The inspiration all started with the bouquet. When photographer Jackie Siggard laid eyes on this massive collection of lush florals with soft pink hues, she knew that she wanted to do a shoot centered around the blooms. The result was a stunning luxury photoshoot with ample amounts of romance.

“I wanted to do more of a luxury styled shoot,” Siggard says. “I had seen a gorgeous bouquet and wanted to style a shoot around that with soft pinks as the colors.”

From there the inspiration ran wild. With the Light Loft Studio as a perfect canvas to create in, Siggard curated a wall of colorful hanging rugs as a backdrop with the bouquet always in full view. A mix of classic modern romance and bohemian edge meet in the bride’s gown: traditional, intricate lace in a romantic silhouette with an overlay of gossamer tulle.

Siggard added yet another twist to the shoot with the inclusion of bridesmaids. “No bride is complete without her maids by her side for the big day,” says Siggard.

From the blushing bridesmaids gowns to the watercolor paper trousseau, Siggard used a soft pink color palette to tie every last detail together, with the colorful backdrop making the happy couple pop.

Sydney and Garrett’s Sunday in the Park with Em & Co.

Sydney and Garrett

Liberty Park, Salt Lake City

Photos by Em & Co. Photography

Whether you’re newlyweds or longtime loves, seeing your partner dressed to the nines is a great reminder of just how good you’ve got it. On a rainy day last January, Utah photographer, Emma Dunn- of Em & Co. Photography – had the chance to witness that magic from behind her camera lens.

Garrett and Sydney have been married for five years now, but according to Emma, the way Garrett looked at Sydney when he saw her in a wedding dress would’ve made you think he was watching her walk down the aisle. The couple’s backdrop – Liberty Park – had been completely cleared out because of the rain, which allowed Emma’s sole focus to be on how in awe Garrett is of his wife and the love Garrett and Sydney share with one another.

Lexi Rabelo – of Lexi Rabelo Films – styled Garrett and Sydney’s dreamy urban shoot with enough tonal contrast to create an air of drama while maintaining the couple’s natural elegance. By choosing primarily understated tones with occasional pops of muted rose and green, Lexi was able to make the billowing crimson smoke bomb that appeared as a backdrop in some of the shots even more striking.

This shoot’s biggest success was its capacity to capture Garrett and Sydney meaningfully and honestly while incorporating props as a means to elevate and add interest to the photos.

4 Seasons, One Shoot: Heidi & Eze’s Southern Utah Bridals

Heidi and Eze were introduced by mutual friends in Hong Kong and after a little over a year of dating, the couple decided they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Heidi was drawn to Eze because of his mature spirit and thoughtfulness, while Eze fell in love with Heidi by seeing how she constantly cares for the people around her. Both adventurous souls, they wanted to celebrate by taking a trip that would allow them to explore new places AND get their bridal photos taken before their wedding day.
When they first heard of the Wave near Kanab, Utah, they immediately wanted to see the beautiful rock formation for themselves. The Wave is a special location not only because of it’s rolling rock layers made of sand, but because it requires a permit with limited availability to be able to visit. Only twenty people are allowed to make the trek per day, and these twenty  people are selected by two separate lotteries: One can be accessed online by people all around the world, and the other is an in-person lottery held daily in Kanab. Ten lucky individuals are selected from each of these lotteries. People put their names in the ring for years hoping to win the chance to see this natural wonder, and it’s a great celebration if and when they are finally selected.
The couple had an early start with the help of hair and makeup artist Mikayla Brown, at 6 am to get ready for their big day. After traveling all the way from China, Heidi and Eze won the lottery for three people, themselves and their photographer, to hike out to the Wave.
After hiking three miles in thick fog and with the help of Google Maps the group found their way to the Wave and began the shoot of a lifetime. Once they finally arrived at their final shooting destination, the couple changed into their formal attire and they started shooting.
“There was no shortage of “good shots” — everywhere we turned, there were distinct wave patterns in the rock that made every frame unique. It was around 37 degrees at the location, so between shots we would take breaks and Heidi would get warm in her coat. These breaks allowed us to look around at the scenery uninhibited by the camera and sit in the moment a little bit longer,” said photographer Meghan Beatty.
The bride wore a stunning dress with a delicate low back and embellishment detailing, while the groom wore a tan suit and black bow tie. The chic attire contrasted perfectly against the red rock surroundings.
“By the end of the session, we were almost freezing cold, and so extremely happy that we had made it! The dream that Heidi and Eze had of visiting the Wave, and having their once-in-a-lifetime photos taken there, was complete! We warmed up by making the journey back to the parking lot and enjoyed the rest of the evening feeling positively content at the crazy day we had just experienced,” said Beatty.
This bridal session transcended across all seasons with the fresh, airy style in attire that are reminiscent of summer weddings, paired with a bridal bouquet filled with spring blooms. The background of snow capped bringing in the feeling of winter contrasting with the red rock and earth tones that bring thoughts of autumn into the shoot. In this once and a life time location all seasons of the year can be seen and they blend perfectly to create a picturesque setting.

Ashley & Paul’s Romantic Roof Restaurant Proposal

A love story described by the couple as two people plus God’s timing finishes in a heart-melting proposal.

Ashley and Paul were the winners of our Valentine’s “Cutest Engagement” contest, so this feature was selected by you!

Paul saw Ashley from afar at an event, and immediately was captivated by her. Though he didn’t get a chance (or muster the guts) to talk to her at the event itself, he ran into her again at a coffee shop later that day and knew this was his shot. After a bit of small talk, Paul asked for her number and if he could sit with her for the afternoon.

The pair spent the next few weeks talking on the phone and going on dates. Their first real date was to Disneyland – how magical is that?! After one particularly romantic, hours long phone call, the pair knew they were meant to be. Paul calls Amber his ‘missing piece.’

“The five hour call flew by,” says Ashley. “We connected on a lot of levels, and our communication styles were direct and similar. It was almost like a business call. But we loved being around each other, and that call just sealed the deal!”

“The more i got to know her, the more I fell in love with her,” says Paul. Her intelligence, her beauty, her walk with God and her genuineness are just a few of the many things that take my breath away.”

After a blissful period of true love, closely followed by Ashley’s followers on Instagram, Paul popped the question in one of the most romantic proposals we’ve seen yet!

The evening before Paul was scheduled to fly to Utah and visit Ashley in Utah, he told her he had a headache and wanted to rest before his night of traveling. Feeling worried for him, Ashley went to her brother’s birthday dinner at the roof without hearing from Paul. Or so she thought.

She arrived on the 10th floor at The Roof restaurant, and was surprised to see not her brother but her favorite photographer. Soon after, Paul emerged from the restaurant with 50 red roses and his guitar.

“It is very difficult to take me by surprise. Paul loves this shot, because he knows he got me!”

Paul led Ashley to the view laden windows, and sang her a song he wrote for her. Ashley held back tears as he got on one knee. She said yes!

Ashley’s engagement ring was a magical moment in itself. Like most brides-to-be, Ashley had her dream ring all planned out. Luckily, Paul was on it. He worked with the jewelers at Raven Fine Jewelers to create the perfect, sparkle-studded oval ring for his future fiancée.

We are head over heels for this heart-melting moment, so we thank our fans for choosing this for us to feature! Ashley and Paul will be married on August 29th, 2020. Keep an eye out, perhaps we’ll feature the wedding, too!
