Flower Fashion: For the Love of Chocolate
by Val Rasmussen

And we’re not talking the box of chocolates you may be getting today for Valentine’s Day. Today’s guest post is from a long-time flower friend of mine (it dates back to working together at Bloomingsales when I was 18). Pamela Martinson Olsen of TriFecTa Design in Sugarhouse is not only an expert wedding and floral designer, but she’s also a freelance writer, so we’re VERY lucky to have her. While she’s scrambling today to make Valentine’s Day floral art for her customers, I also want to share her thoughts here on chocolate-hued fleurs. Here she is, ladies and gents…

For no good reason, I’ve got chocolate on the brain. Lingering holiday withdrawals could be the catalyst, or my preparations for Valentine’s Day, ordering stacks of boxes of locally –made chocolates for my shop. OR, that I recently tried Crio Bru for the first time, a sultry beverage made from roasted cacao beans. Whatever the source, I’ve been craving chocolate in every concoction and that’s what led me here.

Chocolate is a perennial favorite for me in floral color palettes. Yes, it’s been popular for a few seasons in combination with Tiffany blue, honeybee yellow, tangerine. But what I love about chocolate—mahogany, deep amber, bronze—is that it’s a true neutral. As it contrasts with and is a foundation for all the vibrant colors in nature, as bark, branch, cone, seed, earth itself, chocolate is the perfect base for literally any color you adore. Chocolate is a chameleon, a match for any mood, rustic or sophisticated. It is masculine, yet can be transformed into pure femininity with a touch of pale pink. For this month celebrating love, I’m in the mood for rich, velvety chocolates paired with sexy reds. Also, keep your eye out for more chocolate and lilac.
