A glossary of wedding-dress terms
Dress Styles
A-Line: A fitted bodice that gradually flares from the waist; flattering on most figures.
Basque Waistline: Waistline rides low on the hips often dipping down to a point in the front.
Ball Gown: A very tailored waistline with a flowing and often very full skirt. Think traditional fairytale gown.
Empire: A slimmer skirt with a high, fitted waist beginning below the bust line.
Sheath: A typical straight skirt, fitted to take the shape of the body.
Princess: A fitted shape with a seamless waist and a skirt that flares slightly to the hem.
Mermaid: A very slim dress ending with a fish-like flare beginning after the buttocks or thighs. Sometimes known as the trumpet style.
Trains
Bustle: A train that is gently bunched and attached to the back of the gown for freedom of movement during the reception.
Cathedral Train: Extends 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 feet from the waist.
Chapel-Length Train: Extends 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 feet from the waist.
Court Train: A short train extending out only one yard from the waist.
Monarch Train: Extends 12 or more feet from the waist.
Semi-Cathedral Train: Extends 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet from the waist.
Sweep Train: This is the shortest train. It extends back eight-12 inches after touching the floor.
