Dressing Up

 Dressing Up
Photos by Heidi Uhl

On your big day, think beyond basics. Play dress-up with your gown, accessories, hair and makeup. “Don’t be afraid to try something different and new,” says Cynthia Dean, a makeup artist and co-owner of Studio Enizio in Lehi. “Have fun with your look. A wedding is your moment in the spotlight—create something special.” Need a little inspiration? Dean and the beauty team at Studio Enizio, along with the style team at Alta MODA Bridal Boutique in Salt Lake City, pair three designer gowns with three unique looks for nine bridal styles that are anything but average.

Rosa Clara “Rinaldo” silk pique gown ($3,550)

“This Rosa Clara gown is clean and lean, offering great flexibility for creative customization through hair and makeup styling as well as accessorizing,” says Hilary Anderson, owner of Alta MODA Bridal Boutique. “The hat neatly tops off the retro appeal of the sculpted neckline, whereas the lace brings in elegant characteristics."

Look 1 - Sleek & Chic

Style the front of your hair simply to keep the focus on the dramatic neckline of the dress. For a unique updo, add extensions to a ponytail to create additional texture and extra length. For natural-looking makeup, apply shades of ivory, baby pink and soft brown on the eyes, along with a heavy dose of black winged liner on the upper lash lines. Contour the face with peach blush on the apples of the cheeks, and create a subtle lip with a peachy-pink gloss.

Look 2 - Portrait of a Lady

Pin up pieces of your hair to create the illusion of an a-line cut, and add a floral hair accessory for vintage flair. Continue the vintage theme in your makeup: use shades of bronze, copper and brown on the eyes—a slightly heavier application than the first look—and winged liner to balance the line of the hair.

Look 3 - Retro Elegance

Add extensions to an updo for a fuller look. Top with a pillbox hat and birdcage veil. Intensify your makeup with a heavy application of brown, copper and bronze shadows. Contrast dark eyes with a subtle pink lip.

Monique Lhuillier “Meriah” silk satin and tulle textured ballgown ($7,770)

“This gown begs for fabulous styling,” says Anderson. “The hair can go big to play off the skirt, or you can contrast it with sleek, modern looks. By the same measure, you can pump up the gown using a crinoline to add volume to the frothy skirt, or wear it tamed down for a more couture look.”

Look 1 - Queen Bee

Pull hair into a side ponytail and then twist into a bun—make it big and exaggerated. Create a finger wave in the front. Add color to the face with jewel-toned makeup. Apply a bright red-violet shadow over the entire eyelid—layer the shadow in the crease to create dimension — and highlight the brow bone with an iridescent off-white shadow. Apply a sheer coverage foundation and highlight the cheek bone. Finish the look with a sheer violet-hued lip color.

Look 2 - Royal Highness

Create a voluminous pompadour in front and a sleek ponytail in back. For a romantic, evening look, create a classic smoky eye with brown shadows and black liner smudged into the shadow. Add peach blush for soft, golden cheeks. For a glowing nude pout, pat concealer on lips, cover with clear gloss, then dab gold-hued gloss in the center of the lips to create the illusion of fullness.

Look 3 - Modern Princess

Softly curl your hair and pull it half up, leaving some front pieces loose. Keep makeup looking clean: Use shades of yellow-copper and soft brown on the eyes; create dewy, highlighted skin with golden tones. Use a thin application of liner on the eyes and a golden gloss on lips.
