Rosemary & Kevin

Images provided by Erin Kate Photography

Rosemary and Kevin first met as medical students in Utah, so when it came time to plan their wedding, the couple—who currently reside in Massachusetts—knew the Beehive State was the perfect place to return to for their wintertime nuptials.

They planned the entire wedding from Boston (“No small feat!” Rosemary recalls), creating a stylish mountain-themed celebration in a cozy canyon setting. Chic details, from the bride’s unique designer gown to the touches of Tiffany blue in the decor, made the wedding a showstopper—but all Rosemary and Kevin cared about was that they have a fun, memorable party for all their friends and family.

Following the wedding, the celebration continued as the couple and many of their out-of-town guests extended their stay in Utah to ski the slopes.

Before the Wedding

Occupations: Rosemary is an internal medicine physician; Kevin is an anesthesiologist.

How the couple met: Rosemary and Kevin met the first day of their medical internship in Salt Lake City. Both were active in the outdoors, and they started cycling together. Their first date was the Antelope by Moonlight Ride in July of 2005.

How he proposed: The couple went for a bike ride just south of Portland, Maine, in May of 2008, when Kevin proposed in front of the ocean by a lighthouse.

Bridal shower themes: Rosemary and Kevin had a couples' shower with wine and hors d’oeuvres with all of their friends from Utah. Rosemary also had a “recipe-themed” bridal luncheon with family and out-of-town guests the day before the wedding. “Each guest was asked to bring a copy of their favorite recipe for me to start my own collection,” she explains.

Bachelorette party: Rosemary’s sister and best friend hosted a wine and cheese party for the girls.

Bachelor party: Kevin was working in Boston until two days before the wedding, so he didn’t have a bachelor party—yet! (“I’ll give him a free pass for the next year,” says Rosemary.)

Wedding

Place: Log Haven Restaurant, Millcreek Canyon, Salt Lake City

Date: February 28, 2009

The bride wore: a latte-colored Monique Lhuillier two-piece evening gown. “I did not want a typical white strapless wedding gown,” she explains. “I found a wonderful latte-colored gown with a golden sheen. I felt stylish, sophisticated and beautiful—not just bridal!”

The groom wore: a black Hugo Boss suit.

The rings: Rosemary had the rings custom-made. Her engagement ring was Kevin’s grandmother’s wedding set, which consisted of an engagement ring, wedding band and anniversary band welded together. Rosemary had the stones removed and reset to make a new engagement ring, a wedding band, and three necklaces with one stone each for Kevin’s mother, aunt and sister (the living relatives of his grandmother).

Wedding song: “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol.

Reception

Place:  Log Haven Restaurant

Wedding music: a classical guitarist played during the ceremony, and the couple played songs from their iPod collection for dancing and entertainment during the reception.

Menu: Passed hors d’oeuvres included bacon-wrapped scallops, coconut shrimp, spanikopita and pork dumplings. The first course was a salad of organic greens with maple vinaigrette, cranberries and candied walnuts. The second course featured a choice of four dishes: egg pappardelle pasta with fava beans, shaved truffles and parmesan cream; garlic-lime chicken breast with achiote polenta and pumpkin oil; blackened cod in miso with pan fried noodles; Double R Ranch filet mignon with aligot potatoes and haricot verts.

Cake: a white sponge cake with Bavarian cream, raspberry jam and marzipan, covered in a light blue fondant with decorative iced pinecones and chocolate pine needles.

Flowers: arrangements of red amaryllis, ranunculus, Black Magic roses, tulips and calla lilies.

Colors: Tiffany blue and cranberry red.

Theme: “We didn’t want a focused ‘theme’ at the wedding,” says Rosemary. “But because Kevin and I love the outdoors, we tried to use winter outdoor symbols throughout the wedding.” They included tree and mountain motifs on their invitations, snowflake motifs on the programs and decorative sugared pinecones on the cake. “We wanted it to feel appropriate within the setting at Log Haven. Most of the guests were from out of town and used the wedding as a ski vacation, so it fit their mindsets.”

Décor elements: Rosemary’s sister made the programs and place settings. The place settings were tea lights with opaque pearl paper wrapped around them. After guests located their seats in the foyer, each carried the tea light to their table. “It created a little more sparkle at all the tables,” says Rosemary.

Special touches: Rosemary’s sister and Kevin’s sister officiated the wedding ceremony. “It meant a lot for our sisters to say what they saw in us, in our relationship together, and their hopes for our future,” says Rosemary.

For wedding favors, Kevin ordered unique handmade winter hats online. “Kevin has a huge collection of winter beanies, so it was fitting that all the guests have their own,” says Rosemary. The couple tied them with red twine, added a “bedazzled” snowflake thank-you card, and put them on each place setting at the tables. “They were a big hit! People were trading hats all night to find the best one.”

Most Memorable Moment

Rosemary’s answer: “The ceremony. I expected to be so nervous and for it to pass in a flash, but it was such an emotional and special moment. All our family and friends were present to show their support, and everyone’s heartfelt words set the tone for a meaningful commitment.”

Kevin’s answer: “Everything was amazing—the food was excellent, the service was fantastic, and our drinks were never empty. But my favorite image is Rosemary sitting on the floor in her big dress at the end of the night, exhausted, but still tapping her feet to the music.”

Honeymoon

Place: “None yet! We plan to move back to Salt Lake and hope to escape for a honeymoon shortly after. In the running: camping in Alaska, hiking Machu Picchu, the beaches of Croatia or hiking in New Zealand.”
