BEFORE THE WEDDING
Occupations: Elizabeth most recently worked for Timpanogos Harley-Davidson in motorclothing sales, and Brigham worked for Southam and Associates as a sheet metal roofer. Brigham received a full-ride scholarship to Arizona State University’s Law School, so the couple will be moving to Tempe, Ariz.
How the couple met: Through mutual friends.
How he proposed: “Brigham’s work with Southam and Associates involved a job outside of Las Vegas from March until January, so he was out of town every Sunday evening through Friday evening,” says Elizabeth. “It was a Sunday and he was ready to leave for work for the week. We brought all of his things and stopped by his sister’s for his niece’s birthday. He informed me that he had forgotten something at home and we needed to leave early so we could stop by the house before going to work. We got back to the house and he was in the bathroom forever! I was about to go check on him and make sure he was OK, when he came out to the living room where I was sitting on the couch. He got down on one knee and proposed. I immediately said ‘Yes!’ He said he thought of a million places he wanted to propose, but he could not think of a better one than our home.”
Bachelorette party: Elizabeth’s friend Rachel threw a slumber party for all the girls.
Bachelor party: The best man rented a condo at the Sundance Resort where Brigham and his friends stayed.
WEDDING
Place: The Homestead Resort in Midway
Date: February 7, 2009
The bride wore: A Monique Lhuillier “Elle” dress and a jacket made by Pamela Spears at Alta MODA, paired with gold “Nikole” Coach boots. Elizabeth’s accessories included a pearl bracelet and triple-drop pearl earrings, and a hand-made feather and silk flower Laura Jayne hair piece with Swarovski crystals.
The groom wore: A tuxedo accessorized with Batman cufflinks and Sanuk Hemp Sidewalk Surfer shoes in natural.
The rings: Elizabeth’s ring: “My dad custom-made the ring for my mother 35 years ago. It is a round solitaire surrounded by petal-shaped diamonds to create a flower of diamonds. It has a thin brushed white gold band, and when the wedding band is added it has two ribbon-like bands. It is unique and beautiful.” Brigham’s ring is a brushed tungsten band.
Opening prayer and speaker: Performed by Blake Sanchez (brother of bride).
Wedding song: “Divide Me” solo acoustic performed by Kalai.
RECEPTION
Place: The Homestead Resort
Wedding music: For the reception, musician Kalai and his full band performed. “They were amazing, as always,” says Elizabeth. “Anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to hear them perform is definitely missing out!” The couple danced the First Dance to “Tonight (Call You Mine),” written and performed solo on the piano by Joel Pack.
Menu: For the social hour: assorted bruschetta served with a tapenade, buffalo sliders with provolone cheese, caramelized onions and tarragon aioli, crab-stuffed mushroom caps with Hollandaise sauce, goat cheese and portobello mushrooms in a puff pastry purse, and Gruyere cheese fondue with crusty baguettes. For the reception: green salad with assorted dressings and condiments, sliced seasonal fruit, imported and domestic cheeses, penne pasta with grilled vegetables and roasted tomato vinaigrette, fresh seasonal vegetable medley, parsley-buttered potatoes, pork loin in a Dijon mustard crust with Madeira sauce, halibut with roasted pistachio crust and grapefruit buerre blanc sauce on the side, roast prime rib of beef with horseradish sauce, rolls and butter, assorted dessert pastries, chocolate bread pudding with caramel sauce, raspberry lemonade and coffee service.
Cake: A three-tier cake: the layers consisted of vanilla, lemon and raspberry. The couple also had a Batman-themed, chocolate groom’s cake.
Flowers: Created by Studio Stems, the bridal bouquet included green hydrangeas, red roses, ranunculus, black monkey’s tail, and green hyperricum, with a mixed collar of black feathers and greens. The wrap was made from fabric scraps of Elizabeth’s wedding dress. The bridesmaids carried bouquets of deep purple calla lilies. For the reception, arrangements included green hydrangea, black magic roses, purple ranunculus, black monkey’s tail, green hyperricum, orange Asiatic lilies, several colors of tulips, curly willow, mini callas, lily grass and amaranthus. “I cannot say enough good things about Studio Stems,” says Elizabeth. “Audrey O’Brian (the owner and designer) was very helpful in keeping within a certain budget while making everything beautiful.”
Colors: Black and cream with touches of deep purple.
Décor elements: “We incorporated framed photos from our engagement session and my bridal session into the décor,” says Elizabeth.
Special touches/Unique Details: “The wedding didn’t exactly have a Batman theme but there were some Batman details,” says Elizabeth, including cufflinks, a Batman-themed groom’s cake, and the groom and all of the nephews wore Batman bracelets. The nieces were not left out: they received silver heart lockets with their names engraved on them.
Personalized M&M’s.
“As a gift for our guests, we had hand-made soaps in different scents with customized, decorative wraps to thank the guests for sharing our special day with us,” says Elizabeth.
A single pink candle on a silver pillar dripping with crystals: “We lit this candle in memory of my sister Katie who passed away in a car accident at age 15 on July 30, 2004,” says Elizabeth. “I know she was there with us in spirit but I wanted some way to honor her and this seemed appropriate.”
Instead of wearing uncomfortable, formal shoes, the couple purchased Hemp Sanuk Sidewalk Surfers for the boys to wear. “Since our colors were cream and black these shoes in a natural shade looked amazing with the tuxes,” says Elizabeth. “This was Brigham’s touch—he wears these kind of shoes every day and I thought it was cool to have him incorporate a touch of everyday into his look. Every time I run into one of the boys since the wedding, they have been wearing their shoes, so I am going to say they were a hit!”
“We had two horse-drawn sleighs with real cowboys (hot ones if I might add),” says Elizabeth. “We used the sleighs for our photography session and then the guests were able to take sleigh rides. It was a perfect sunny, but snowing, day.”
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
Elizabeth’s answer: “We forgot the rings! During the ceremony we had to borrow rings from the wedding party!”
Brigham’s answer: “Seeing my bride for the first time.”
HONEYMOON
Place: “Our friend has a house in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and he let us stay there free of charge—all we had to do was tip the staff,” says Elizabeth. “It was the best trip ever! And, because it was so cost friendly we were able to stay three amazing weeks!”
A memorable moment of the honeymoon: “The honeymoon had so many memorable moments like swimming with dolphins and scuba diving,” says Elizabeth. “But, one memory that was great was while we were relaxing by our own private pool overlooking the beach the married couple that took care of the house knocked coconuts off of the trees, cracked them open and made us fresh coco locos—I would say that is living in the lap of luxury!”
WEDDING ADVICE
“Make sure you love your photographer!” says Elizabeth. “I chose Rebekah Westover, and I look through my photos every day—even three months later! The photos are amazing and truly captured the spirit of the day. Also, ask your photographer to suggest vendors. Rebekah gave me a list of her preferred vendors and I ended up using every one of them. Not only were they all amazing, but, because they were accustomed to working together, it went flawlessly.”
