Sara & Timothy
To transport the wedding party to Sara and Tim’s remote ceremony location, 15 vans carried 150 guests up a dirt road to an aspen- and evergreen-filled meadow, with the spectacular Timpanogos Mountain as a backdrop. Guests were then escorted to a stylish reception, where they enjoyed specialty cocktails and a five-course plated wine dinner. For close family and friends, an all-night post-reception “after party” followed, with more food, drinks and dancing until dawn.
Before the wedding
Occupations: Sara is an attorney; Tim is a business development manager.
How the couple met: A mutual friend introduced Sara and Tim in the winter of 2003, when they were both working and living in Park City. Their first dates were spent skiing on the mountain.
How he proposed: On the day before Sara’s law school graduation, Tim proposed with friends and family present on the balcony at Sara’s aunt’s beachfront home in Manhattan Beach, California. It was the same balcony where, three years earlier, Sara had asked Tim to move to Los Angeles with her.
Bachelorette party: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in a beautiful home in the cliffs of Conchos Chinas, where the ladies enjoyed a full staff, two swimming pools, poolside massages, manicures and pedicures.
Bachelor party: San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. The men enjoyed surfing, fishing, poker and plenty of food, and found creative things to do when the power went out and water stopped working.
Wedding
Place: Elk Meadow, Sundance Resort
The bride wore: For the ceremony, an ivory duchess satin Monique Lhuillier gown with a satin sash in lavender. For after-dinner dancing, a short, white Zac Posen dress.
The groom wore: A Calvin Klein double-button peak lapel black tuxedo with white suspenders and a black bowtie.
Music: A piano player and an 8-piece string section.
Reception
Place: Sundance Resort, Sundance
Music: The Cowling Band, jazz music
Wedding song: “I Believe” by Stevie Wonder
Menu: A five-course plated wine dinner, including seared sea scallops, organic mixed greens, herb- and mustard seed-crusted Utah trout fillets, pepper-crusted beef fillets and a trio of cheeses, including local Utah goat-, cow- and sheeps-milk cheeses.
Cake: Meyer lemon lavender cake with lemon buttercream.
Flowers Green roses, green “Kermit” chrysanthemums, eggplant calla lilies.
Décor elements: The reception was styled to feel romantic and modern: drum lantern chandeliers hung over reception tables, and an outdoor lounge area featured low white seating, hanging lanterns and orchid centerpieces.
Colors: Celery, eggplant and white.
Theme: Lavender. Fresh lavender bundles were included with each invitation, sprigs of lavender acted as place settings, the cake featured lavender flavors, and guests enjoyed a signature lavender-blueberry martini created by Sara and Tim.
Unique details: A custom walkway was built from the van drop-off area to the ceremony location so guests wouldn’t get their heels stuck in the dirt as they walked to their seats. For wedding favors, the mother of the bride, Barb Phillips, sponsored an individual animal from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in honor of each guest or couple invited to the wedding. Each guest received a letterpressed booklet with the name, picture and bio of the pet sponsored on their behalf, and a dog bone pendant engraved with the guest’s name. A few guests even adopted their sponsored animals, following the wedding.
Most memorable moment
Sara’s answer: “There was a swirling-type wind, and you could hear faint growlings of thunder. Just as we were saying our vows, eagles were circling overhead, coasting on the thermals. But the weather never got bad, and as the ceremony ended the sun came out—it was beautiful.”
Tim’s answer: “Seeing Sara come down the aisle for the first time in her dress—she looked so amazing and glowing. And being in that gorgeous setting among the vibrant aspens and mountains. It was an amazing start to a phenomenal party that lasted all night!”
Honeymoon
Place: Greek islands of Crete and Santorini
A memorable moment: “The owner of the boutique hotel we stayed at in Santorini took us out for a night on the town. We drank Greek wine and ate local taverna food, then went to a bar on a remote part of the island and learned traditional Greek dancing and plate-breaking.”
