Sleeves Make a Comeback

Nov 4, 2009 - 11:59 AM

If you read fashion magazines or pay attention to runway shows, you already know that dresses with sleeves are a big trend for fall and winter fashions. But sleeves are also finding their way into bridal fashions. Propelled in part by Ivanka Trump's custom Vera Wang gown, wedding dresses with sleeves may soon be all the rage with modern brides. This news is espeically exciting for local brides seeking modest but stylish gowns.

The New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn applauded the recently-wed Trump on her lace-sleeved gown (which Trump designed for her Orthodox Jewish ceremony), saying it "made a fresh statement" among a sea of strapless looks. Wang was also a fan of the more modest gown. When asked if she thought Trump's gown might start a trend, Wang said, "Nothing would make me happier. I’ve been doing strapless dresses for 15 years. It’s tiring."

Wang's fellow bridal designers must also be growing weary of strapless. Some designers—including Anne Barge, Judd Waddell and Melissa Sweet (pictured below, left to right)—sent designs with sleeves down their runways at Bridal Fashion Week in October, and I suspect we will see more sleeved-styles come bridal fashion week in spring.

What do you think about wedding gowns with sleeves? Are you happy to see the emergence of a more modest look or will you forever be a fan of strapless?
