Lessons From the Academy Awards {Fashion}

Mar 9, 2010 - 04:56 PM

Being in the business of brides, I am constantly thinking of how things relate to weddings. So while watching The 82nd Academy Awards on Sunday and drooling over the parade of satin, tulle and taffeta on the red carpet, I naturally thought how many of the gowns would look sensational on brides. In fact, I devised a few fashion lessons inspired by the awards for brides and grooms to keep in mind while selecting their wardrobes for the big day...

Fashion Lesson 1: Don't be afraid to bring on the bling. Sandra Bullock (in Marchesa), Cameron Diaz (in Oscar de la Renta) and Miley Cyrus (in Jenny Packham) all rocked metallic frocks decked out in beads, sparkles and crystals. For your moment in the spotlight, why not shine in an embellished gown like these stars?

Fashion Lesson 2: A touch of black creates a sophisticated look. Black accents are a growing bridal fashion trend (like Vera Wang's tulle gown in the spring issue of Martha Stewart Weddings), and for good reason: As evidenced by Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture, a dose of black lends a sophisticated, dramatic edge to a classic white, ivory or cream gown.

Fashion Lesson 3: You can look pretty in pink. Blush, pink, buff—whatever the shade of pink, it looked oh-so-charming on the likes of Anna Kendrick (in Elie Saab Haute Couture) and Demi Moore (in Atelier Versace). Many bridal designers are crafting gowns in these soft feminine shades, so you can hop on the pretty-in-pink bandwagon.

Fashion Lesson 4:  Sleeves can still be sexy. Just look at Meryl Streep (in Chris March)—her gown's sleek long sleeves balance out the dramatic deep v-neck. Sexy yet sophisticated.

Fashion Lesson 5: Ruffles reign supreme. Whether in shades of purple (like Zoe Saldana's Givenchy Haute Couture gown), dove gray (like Elizabeth Banks in Versace) or raspberry red (like Vera Farmiga's Marchesa gown), ruffles are still all the rage. They lend a romantic, whimsical touch to any gown and are oh-so girly—ideal for brides.

Fashion Lesson 6: Pink + black  = a match made in heaven. Wouldn't Luciana Barroso and Matt Damon (in Salvatore Ferragamo) make the perfect bride and groom? Take a cue from this Hollywood couple when coordinating you and your hubby's wedding attire.

Fashion Lesson 7: Nothing looks as good as a man in a well-tailored tux. Feast your eyes on Tom Ford (in his own design), Jake Gyllenhaal (in Burberry) and Ryan Reynolds (in Tom Ford)—dashing, dapper, incredibly handsome. Everything a groom should be.

Those are all the fashion lessons for today! What were some of your favorite looks from the Academy Awards? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
