Runway Report: Barcelona Bridal Week

Jun 19, 2009 - 09:16 AM

I am sucker for anything Spanish, from food and drink (tapas and cava) to art (Gaudí and Picasso) to fashion (Zara and Balenciaga) to film (Almodóvar, who else?)—the list goes on and on. But one thing that makes me particularly weak in the knees is Spanish bridal fashion. With swoon-worthy gowns from collections like Rosa Clara and Model Novias, Spanish designers are raising the style bar for wedding fashion.

Luckily, here in Salt Lake I am not alone in my Spanish adoration: Hilary Anderson, owner of Alta MODA Bridal Boutique, is equally enthusiastic about Spanish bridal gowns. After reporting on the newest trends from Barcelona Bridal Week on the Alta MODA blog, she shares with us the latest in Spanish bridal fashions hot off the runways :

“Once you try on a Spanish bridal gown, you'll understand my pure love and passion for all things Spanish fashion," says Hilary. "More and more, Barcelona Bridal Week sets the trend for nearly all other markets and designers—the U.S. markets included. This year's runway presentations out of Catalonia were a welcome preview of exciting things to come. The clearest trends were that of dramatic skirts, sleeves (you read it right—this is a trend Utah brides are sure to love!) and modern and architectural elements. The wedding dress, in all it's glory, is most definitely back. Strong carry-over trends are the one-shoulder gown, layered skirts and floral embellishments. Whimsy meets edgy—it's a brilliant combo.”

I absolutely love the last one! It is Nicholas Ghesquire for Balenciaga meets Romona Keveza. The structure and unique panel train set it apart from others that may be considered similar.
